Insulation for Reformer Tubes

Reformer tubes are critical components in high-temperature processes such as Ammonia production, Fertilizer manufacturing, Methanol synthesis, and Hydrogen production. These industries rely on Steam Methane Reforming (SMR) and other catalytic reforming processes that operate at extreme temperatures (800–1000°C). Over time, uneven heat distribution, thermal stress, and hot spots accelerate tube degradation, leading to reduced efficiency, increased fuel consumption, and unexpected failures.

CONVENTIONALLY INSULATED VS I-COVER™ INSULATED REFORMER TUBES

During shutdowns and maintenance, furnaces cool down, causing reformer tubes that normally protrude above the furnace roof to retract just below the furnace surface. Conventional insulation methods cannot be applied during this phase due to the lack of exposed surfaces.

Once operations resume, the tubes expand and become exposed to extreme temperatures exceeding 400°C, leading to significant heat loss and increased ambient temperatures in the furnace roof area, creating an unsafe working environment.

Furthermore, conventional insulation methods are rigid, wear off quickly, and are difficult to remove for inspection, making maintenance cumbersome.

Materials Fabrication

I-Cover™ is manufactured by stitching insulation material between high temperature fabrics, additional fasteners are then added to the top fabric for ease of installation and removal. As result, we have removable insulation covers and blankets, which are flexible, durable and tough. They are also known as thermal insulation jackets because of these properties.
